Surface Preparation & Sanding
For Suffield, CT and Surrounding Connecticut Towns
- What We Provide
required steps on every project, not optional upgrades.
Prep work isn’t the most visible part of a paint job, but it’s the part that determines whether the finish looks smooth and lasts for years, or shows every flaw within a season. Bengston Painting Services treats surface preparation and sanding as required steps on every project, not optional upgrades.
Why Prep Work Matters
Paint applied over dust, grease, glossy surfaces, or unaddressed cracks will show those imperfections through the finish and often fail early — peeling, cracking, or losing adhesion well before it should. Time spent on prep is what separates a paint job that looks good on day one from one that still looks good three years later.
What Our Prep Process Includes
Depending on the surface, prep can include washing down grease and grime, scraping loose or peeling paint, filling nail holes and small cracks, caulking gaps at trim and corners, and sanding glossy surfaces so new paint has something to grip.
Sanding for a Smooth Finish
We sand between coats where needed, especially on trim, doors, and cabinetry, to knock down any raised grain or brush marks before the final coat goes on. This step is what gives painted trim and cabinets that smooth, professional feel rather than a slightly rough or uneven texture.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is surface prep included in your painting quotes?
Standard prep — cleaning, minor patching, caulking, and sanding — is included in every project quote. More extensive repairs are scoped separately.
Why does prep sometimes take as long as the painting itself?
On older homes or surfaces with heavy wear, prep can genuinely take as much time as the painting. Skipping it to save time is the most common cause of early paint job failures.
Do you sand between every coat of paint?
We sand between coats where the surface calls for it, particularly on trim, doors, and cabinets, to keep the final finish smooth.
